Sweet Jonna - you *HAVE* to watch the IceMan Wim Hof documentary f you haven't seen it. This man has learned how to control his immune system -- something scientists said could not be done! His breathing techniques and cold water immersion are the key. I think it will be inspiring for you to watch right now as you are down...

Hej Axel,
Tack så mycket for your forgiveness and your kind words. Being a witness to this honest misunderstanding has taught me to not take any language for granted across cultures.

I so wish I could have been born and raised in Sweden and have a Swedish life to call my own! I love you all so much, could I respectfully request permission to be an honorary Swede? [smile]

With much love and respect,
Darrell

Axel,
Please forgive those of us who may use expressions not realizing the ramifications of the cultural differences. I know I, for one, would never have thought that term would be taken any other way than as a kind gesture.

Also, please know I (and I suspect Christiane too) have a great love and respect for Swedish culture and would never intentionally say or do anything to offend or hurt our beautiful Swedish friends. I'm so sorry for this honest misunderstanding.

Christiane,
I immediately recognized "sweet child" to be a kind term of endearment and was shocked that someone took offense to it. Being from the southern United States (Louisiana), it reminds me of the term "honey child" which is also used as a term of endearment here. I commend you for de-escalating this situation with calm and responsible words. Your actions show you are a kind and humble person, which I think the world needs more of those character traits.

Much love to both of you, Axel and Christiane,
Darrell

Hello Axel,
my apologies . . . . 'sweet child' is a term of endearment for someone who is ill and needs comforting and maybe some motherly advice . . . . I first heard it from my sister-in-law's mother who came from West Virginia. There is absolutely no disrespect meant towards Jonna who is not feeling well and has asked for some advice.
Sorry you were offended by the use of that term, and I accept the responsibility for upsetting you in using it in reference to Jonna.

I suppose the differences between the West Virginia mountain people and the people of Scandinavia must be greater than I had thought . . . . my sister-in-law's mother was a cultured woman of good family and I never saw anything disrespectful in her use of that term, but I suppose it's use was colloquial to that geographical and cultural area.
